Questions to Ask DJs

There are a lot of DJs out there – some good, some bad, some high priced, some low priced, and finding the best one can be a bit challenging. Here's a list of questions you can use to help narrow the field of prospective DJs down to only professional DJ companies.

  • Who will be my DJ?
In order to find the perfect DJ, you need the opportunity to chat with the actual DJ who will be there on your big day. Personality makes all the difference in the world! You need to find a DJ whose personality is perfect for the two of you and the reception you're creating. With other DJ services, that can be a challenge - you chat with their sales guy but won't know the DJ until a few weeks (or worse, few days) before.. When you book You Had Me At I Do, you are guaranteed to have the owner and DJ-in-Chief as your own, personal DJ, MC, and wedding expert on your big day.

  • How many other receptions will your company have on our day?
This question is a huge one. If the company has ten other weddings on your big day, you will be nothing more than 'client #11' to them. When you book with You Had Me At I Do, on the other hand, your reception will be the only wedding reception we'll do on your day. Because of this you'll be the most important people in the world to us on your day and you'll have complete flexibility! Need to change your times? No problem. Need to add hours? Done. Need to change things up at the last minute? You got it! Our ability to change anything and everything you need at a moment's notice is something you won't find with other DJ companies.

  • Will you do exactly what we ask you to do?
The correct answer is “absolutely!” Keep in mind, many brides and grooms forget that although they’re the guests of honor at their reception, the party is actually for their guests and the entertainment must be tailored to the guests. A good DJ will do what you ask of him or her. A great DJ will help identify potential show stoppers and will work with the two of you to create the perfect evening to avoid them. Chances are this is the first and last wedding reception you’ll plan. We, on the other hand, have done hundreds! We’ll draw on our years of experience to help you create the perfect reception – a reception that is as unique as the two of you yet universal enough to guarantee that your guests have a great time.

  • Will you take requests?
The correct answer is an unequivocal “heck yeah!” We will ask your guests for their requests throughout the evening, we’ll give you your own web page at YouHadMeAtIDo.com that your guests can visit to request music ahead of time (no user names, no passwords), and we also have a live Twitter ‘now playing’ feed that your guests can follow and use to request music. As long as the songs aren't on your 'do not play' list, we'll play them. Our goal is to make it easy for your guests to request music. They tell us what they want to hear, we play it, they dance. It’s a beautiful thing!

  • Do you have back-up equipment?
It’s pretty costly to have back up equipment and to bring it to every event. But, DJ equipment in general is used every weekend of the year and sometimes it does break down. It’s important to have a back-up! We always bring back up or redundant speakers, computers, cables, lights - everything. We even have back ups of back ups for our critical equipment like computers.

  • Do you do any coordinating or MCing?
Playing music is actually just a small portion of what a great DJ does at a wedding. He or she will coordinate the evening's activities such as getting your guests to their seats before dinner and coordinating the Grand March. There are microphones for speeches (and Best Men and Maids of Honor that need to be taught how to use them), alternatives to clanking glasses to be announced and coordinated, getting the the right people in the right places at the right times for the special dances, getting (and keeping) your guests on the floor and much more. We do all of that and more! We're not 'just a DJ' - we're your wedding professional.

  • What do you do if [insert your biggest fear here]?
Nothing on your wedding day will go exactly as you’ve planned – it’s a proven fact. We've been in business for almost two decades - we've seen almost everything that could possibly go wrong. The success of a wedding reception lies with the DJ’s ability to ‘go with the flow’, ‘roll with the punches’, or whichever cliché you’d like to use. The point is this - a good DJ will have contingency plans. A great DJ will have the wisdom to realize that a contingency plan is useless unless he or she can quickly adjust to minor and major changes.

  • Can you give me references?
First of all, do some homework - check the DJ out online. Search for reviews and ratings and read all of them. Then ask the DJ for 10 references. Not one or two, not five, but 10. Any DJ can have a great gig or two...but requesting 10 references will help weed out some of the newer DJs as well as DJs that don't consistently deliver for their clients. When you talk to the references, ask what went well and what didn't go well. Here at You Had Me At I Do, we're proud of our five star ratings on multiple wedding sites and we'll gladly give you as many references as you'd like.
