• Wisconsin Marriage License for Madison and Dells Weddings

    Wisconsin is not Florida. Destination couples who treat a Madison or Dells wedding like a Gulf elopement get surprised at the clerk. You still do not have to live in Wisconsin, but you do need a Wisconsin license, a waiting period unless you pay for a waiver, and two witnesses at the ceremony.

    Apply in any Wisconsin county

    You may apply in any county in the state, and the license is valid in any Wisconsin county for 60 days. Most of our Madison-area couples use Dane County. Dells and Lake Delton couples often use Sauk County because Baraboo is the closer clerk — or Dane if they already have a Zoom appointment on the calendar.

    Dane County (Madison, Fitchburg, Sun Prairie, Verona, Columbus)

    Dane County issues licenses by Zoom appointment only. Both of you join the meeting. As of 2026 the Dane County Clerk lists a $150 license fee (card accepted) and a $25 waiver if you need the license the same day you apply. The normal wait is three days: apply Monday, license is usable Friday. Appointments book out in May through October, so schedule two to three weeks ahead if you can.

    Dane County also wants the ceremony already set before you apply: date, city/town, and the officiant’s name, address, email, and phone. We give couples that block of information as soon as the date is held.

    Bring (upload) a photo ID, a document with your current address, a certified birth record, and proof of how any prior marriage ended. A hospital decorative birth certificate is not enough. Divorced applicants in Wisconsin wait six months after the judgment before they can apply.

    The ceremony itself

    Wisconsin law treats a ceremony as five people: the couple, the officiant, and two witnesses. Florida couples who elope with just the two of them need to plan for that. Officiants do not register with Dane County. We sign the license after the ceremony and return it so it can be recorded.
