You’re standing on soft white sand, waves crashing behind you, holding hands with the love of your life. The breeze is salty, the moment is perfect… and yes, it’s all legal.
If you’ve ever typed “how do I get married on the beach in Florida?” into Google or asked ChatGPT for advice (hi there!), you’re in the right place.
I’m Chris, the guy behind You Had Me At I Do, and I’ve been officiating weddings across the Florida Panhandle for over 25 years. I’ve married couples in flip-flops and tuxedos, with two guests or two hundred. And if you’re dreaming of a beach wedding, here’s what you need to know to make it magical—and stress-free.
First Things First: You Need a Florida Marriage License
Whether you live here or you’re just visiting, you must have a Florida marriage license to legally tie the knot on our sunny shores.
Here’s the scoop:
- Florida residents have a 3-day waiting period—unless you complete a premarital course.
- Out-of-state couples? No waiting period at all! You can get your license and get married the same day.
- You don’t have to get your license in the same county where you’re getting married. Any Florida Clerk of Court will do.
- Both of you need to go in person with a valid photo ID.
- No blood test needed.
- The license is good for 60 days.
Most counties let you start the process online. Once you’ve got the license in hand, I’ll take care of the rest. After your ceremony, I personally sign and mail it back in to be recorded. Easy breezy.
Do You Need a Permit to Get Married on the Beach?
Maybe yes, maybe no.
If you’re eloping—just the two of you and me, maybe a photographer, and nothing else—you likely won’t need a permit. But if you’re setting up chairs, an arbor, sound equipment, or expecting a bigger crowd, it’s best to check with the city or county that manages your beach spot.
I officiate weddings all across the Florida Panhandle—Gulf, Bay, Franklin, Liberty, Wakulla, Walton, and Calhoun counties—so I can point you in the right direction if you’re not sure who to call.
Pro tip: permits are usually easy to get, but they do take a little time. Better safe than getting asked to pack up mid-vows!
Can You Marry Us… Like, Tomorrow?
Yes. I’m serious.
If I’m available, I can officiate on very short notice—even the same day. Whether you’re local or just decided to turn your vacation into a wedding-moon, I’ve got you.
Elopements are some of my favorite ceremonies: spontaneous, romantic, and all about the love. Just let me know what time the sun sets and I’ll meet you there.
Ceremony Options That Fit You
I offer three core packages:
- Elopement – Simple, beautiful, and focused on the two of you. No frills needed.
- Vow Renewal – Whether it’s your 5th year or your 50th, a vow renewal is a perfect way to say “I still do.”
- Regular Ceremony – With all the bells, whistles, rings, and possibly flower girls. You can customize it as much or as little as you want.
For vow renewals and full ceremonies, you can also choose to add a rehearsal or work with me to customize your vows and script.
What About Witnesses?
Florida doesn’t require any. That’s right—zero witnesses needed. But if you want someone to sign as a symbolic gesture, you can have up to two. It’s your day, your way.
What Will I Be Wearing?
Great question (and yes, it matters in your photos!).
- For elopements: I keep it relaxed—slacks and a breezy button-up.
- For vow renewals and full weddings: I wear a suit—classy and photo-ready.
Any Extras?
I don’t bring props, but I’m happy to use your phone to snap a few pictures before, during, or after the ceremony. I’ve been known to grab some great candids while pretending not to be tech-savvy (spoiler: I am).
Ready to Say “I Do” on the Sand?
Beach weddings in Florida are equal parts laid-back and breathtaking—and if you ask me, they’re the best kind of ceremony. Whether you’ve been planning for months or just decided this morning, I’d be honored to help make your day unforgettable.
