  • Internet churches and free online ordinations mean a lot of inexperienced people are dabbling as wedding officiants. That is fine if you want a friend up there. It is a different job from hiring someone whose work is the ceremony. This page is the honest comparison — drawn from our officiant FAQs and how we already run rehearsals.

    What a friend or family officiant is taking on

    • A legal document they have to sign correctly and return on time.
    • A room (or a beach) full of people looking at them when someone forgets where to stand.
    • Your vows, your relatives, and the one cue the photographer needs.
    • A rehearsal, if you have one — which is when most processional confusion shows up.

    Rehearsal coaching if you keep the friend

    If Uncle Mike is ordained and you want him to speak, that can still work. What usually fails is skipping the rehearsal, or treating the rehearsal as a party instead of a blocking session. Walk the processional once, assign a person who actually starts the music, and decide who holds the rings. If you want us to run that rehearsal even when we are not the officiant of record, say so on the contact form — that is coaching, not a bait-and-switch into full planning.
