The worst thing you can do is search for a DJ by price. It doesn’t matter what price you have in mind – you’ll certainly find a DJ that fits. The problem is that you’ve only managed to find a DJ that fits in the range you decided on rather than a DJ who will ensure your event is a success.
DJs are in a unique type of business. We’ll charge as much as we can while still filling our weekends. If we absolutely rock and get tons of referral business, we typically cost more…because clients are willing to pay a little more to get what they’ve seen us do for other clients. They want their wedding to be just as perfect. If we suck and have absolutely zero referrals or guests at past events wouldn’t touch us with a 10 foot pole, we charge super low rates just to get bookings. You truly get what you pay for.
So, instead of shopping by price, shop by stars. Look for DJs with four or five stars and great reviews. You’ll wind up with a great DJ and a perfect wedding!
With that said, if there isn’t money in your budget for a five star DJ, go ahead and look at three star DJs. But before you book, ask to see the DJ in action at an upcoming wedding. While it’s not a perfect system for weeding out all of the bad DJs, it’ll give you some perspective.
