• Young DJs Have Much to Learn…

  • As I was setting up for a wedding today, one of the folks at the venue struck up a conversation with me. He told me that he too was a wedding DJ and had been performing for just a couple of years. He was telling me about his high profile client from a few weeks ago and said ‘it was the kind of client where you get nervous because you know everything has to go right’.

I asked him a little bit more, wondering why he didn’t get a little nervous before every wedding. He told me that most of his clients aren’t too picky so if something doesn’t go as planned it’s not a big deal.

I asked if I could give him a little piece of advice and he agreed. I told him that he needs to treat every client like they are a high profile client. DJs have the success of the single most important day in a young bride’s life so far sitting firmly in their hands.

It’s a day that the bride has been dreaming about her entire life. The couple and their family have spent months if not years planning everything out so the most important day of their lives is perfect.

I told him that once he fully understands the critical role he plays, he’ll get a little nervous and that nervousness will force him to make sure everything is perfect. That nervousness is why I double and triple check my equipment and have back-ups for my back-ups. It’s why I check in with my couples a few months in advance, a few weeks in advance, and a few days in advance just to make sure I have the latest details. It’s why the first thing I do when arriving is check in with the planner, venue coordinator, caterer, and photographer to make sure we’re all on the same page. It’s why I give 110% to every client.

I did a little snooping on a well known wedding site – he’s a three star rated DJ. And that, right there, is the difference. Unless you have a four or five star rated DJ, you end up with someone who is just there to flash a few lights and play a few tunes. When you have a five star rated DJ, you have someone who understands how important your day is and does everything possible to make sure it’s perfect.
