  • I had the pleasure of officiating a ceremony today without being the DJ for the reception as well. It was a rare opportunity to check out the competition. To be fair, it was at the Lagaret in Stoughton which is a challenging venue for DJs. The ceremony and dinner are held on the second floor while cocktails and the dance are on the first. It requires the DJ to have two separate systems.

I checked out the reception area early on – the DJ had all the latest and greatest lights and effects on a solid truss system as well as decent speakers. I then checked out the ceremony area and he had a separate mixer, mic and speaker.

Unfortunately, despite having great equipment, the DJ had absolutely no table cloths, skirts, or skrims (fabric covering the speaker stands). Every cord and wire was exposed.

Beyond that, the microphone for the ceremony was wired – he made a point of telling me that he left extra cable in case I needed to move the mic during the ceremony.

I don’t blame the kid – he was either new to the business or was working for a company that was new. He was what we call ‘naked’ where the inner workings are in plain sight. Rule number one for DJs: cables and tables should never be visible. Rule number two: go cordless whenever possible.

Nobody wants to look behind the curtain in Oz. Nobody wants to see how things work. They want a clean appearance where the inner workings are hidden. They want flashy. They want smoke and mirrors. They don’t want cables, cords, wires, and bare tables. Here at You Had Me At I Do, our mics are wireless, our tables are covered and skirted, our cables are hidden, and our speaker and light stands have skrims. Even our uplights are wirelessly connected. We create the perfect ambiance without showing how it’s created.

Make sure you ask your DJ for pics of his or her setup. You’ll instantly know if your DJ is of our caliber or if your DJ is ‘naked’. Book us and you won’t have to worry!
